Lingo, Other VoIP Providers Leave Customers Fuming
Consumer complaints about Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services are on the rise. Among the hundreds of complaints filed each year with the Better Business Bureau regarding VoIP providers, some of most common issues involve deceptive sales tactics, unauthorized billing practices, poor customer service, and inflexible fixed contracts.
VoIP providers use an Internet connection to turn analog signals - like those used in traditional phone lines - into a digital, broadband signal. As an incentive for consumers to switch to their services, VoIP operators often sign customers up for free or charge a one-time, minimal fee. For many users, however, it's the fine print that leaves them vulnerable.
Lingo and many other VoIP providers charge an early termination fee to customers who terminate their contracts early, regardless of the reason. These fees may be impermissible under certain state laws.
